THE CHESHIRE CATS
In 2021 we recognised that the time had come for us to start welcoming Junior Roller Derby skaters into the league
Our belief was that there was a huge gap locally for kids’ sport opportunities outside of the ‘mainstream / normal’ sports.
We opened our first intake in Term 3 of 2021 and haven’t looked back.
Roller Derby is a colourful, action packed, full contact sport played by people on roller skates. It requires a high level of skill and fitness. From its roots in Texas, it has become the fastest growing women’s sport in the world. Nowhere is this more evident than in Australia.
SENIORS:
THE MAD HITTERS
As Mildura Roller Derby League continued to grow – despite Covid – in 2021, we decided that we needed an official “Team Name” for our Seniors and the Juniors that we were hoping to attract.
As always following a Roller Derby game away, there’s a L O N G drive home for us Mildurians. The closest tends to be 4-4.5 hours away, whilst the furthest to date has been 7 hours away.
One of the most joyous outcome from travelling home from games is the post-game conversations. A few times whilst driving home, conversations revolved around fun team names and league branding.
One of the concepts that was dreamt up was to have our league based on an ‘Alice In Wonderland’ theme… with The Mad Hitters being the name for our Seniors and The Cheshire Cats for our Junior. We decided our main gal in the Seniors logo would be called “M’Alice” and so we went about creating some fun logos and branding to reflect that.
It’s fair to say that everyone who comes across it LOVES IT!! (Especially us).
